Public Hearing
Potential Wind River Middle School/Stevenson High School Consolidation
Friday, April 18th
Stevenson High School Library
6:00 pm
Greetings Community,
The Stevenson-Carson School District is facing significant budget challenges, just like many school systems across the nation. What is unique to us is that our Secure Rural School (SRS) federal funding has not been reauthorized. This means we must budget for next year without those very significant funds and account for our reduced revenue moving forward. There are several factors contributing to the gap between the cost of current programs and our funding, but the result is that we need to reduce current expenses by approximately $1.85 million dollars for next year.
Our enrollment is projected to continually decrease, and we must consider all options to maintain a high level of service for our students. The Board of Directors is inviting the community to a public hearing about the potential of consolidating Wind River Middle School and Stevenson High School. This consolidation would save approximately $636,000 the first year, and $656,000 in the following years. There are benefits and challenges associated with this option, but the financial implication must be considered. If this is not a direction that is taken, those monies must be cut from our already reduced programs. In this model, the 6th grade would remain at Carson Elementary and the 7th and 8th grades would move to the Stevenson High School campus.
Please consider joining us for this public hearing about the school consolidation option. If you are unable to attend, I welcome any input and will share that communication with our Board of Directors. I can be reached at colvardi@scsd303.org or (509) 427-5674. Thank you for your collaboration and partnership as we make the best decisions possible for our learners.
Most Sincerely,
Ingrid
